President's Message - Karen ParsonsWelcome to the home of the Jefferson County School Media Association, the professional organization for school media librarians serving parochial, private and public schools in Jefferson County. In tough economic times, the job of the school media librarian is more important than ever. Our students must be critical consumers of information in order to research occupations, choose a college or other career training, manage their money effectively, use credit wisely—and more! In short, knowing how to access, evaluate and use information is a survival skill. School media librarians play a vital role in teaching these 21st Century information literacy skills. School libraries are also feeling the economic pinch of smaller budgets and decreased staffing. As school media librarians find themselves expected to do more—with less—it is reassuring to know they can call on the collective knowledge and expertise of colleagues through their professional organization, JCSMA. If you are not a member of JCSMA, I encourage you to join. I think you will find the collegial support of other school media librarians a valuable resource. |
